Anna, a Deaf student who lives and studies in Luton, visited our Advice service at City Lit, London after her college interpreter told her about the service.
Anna had no access to a Deaf advice service in her home town and had relied on her college interpreter to translate personal letters and forms.
She had also been attending medical appointments without a British Sign Language (BSL) Interpreter.
Our Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG) Officer met with Anna and discussed the barriers that she was facing.
They reviewed the correspondence that Anna had received and worked together to complete forms and respond to letters.
With Anna’s permission, our IAG Officer also contacted her GP and explained that Anna required a BSL Interpreter to attend all medical appointments.
As a result of her visits to our Advice service, Anna’s confidence has grown and she is more aware of her rights.
Anna said ‘Without RAD, I would be lost. I wouldn’t have known my rights and what I am entitled to. Now I know and I feel so positive about the future.’
